The UN's Special Representative in Africa, Ibrahim Gambari has called on the international community to support the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in its economic growth initiatives, South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) radio news said on Monday.
Speaking at the official opening of SADC's conference at Ezulwini in Mbabane, Swaziland, he called for a joint venture between the international community and SADC member states to effectively fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Gambari also appealed to the international community to maintain
sanctions against the Angolan UNITA rebel movement for violating UN resolutions.
