Tandja visits France

President Mamadou Tandja began a three-day working visit to Paris on Tuesday during which he is expected to seek the restoration of French aid, suspended - except for projects benefiting the people directly - after President Ibrahim Bare Mainassara’s assassination in April 1999. The French Foreign Ministry announced on Monday that Tandja would hold talks with France’s president, prime minister and the speakers of the Senate and the National Assembly. “Contacts with MEDEF, the CIAN (Center for French Investors in Africa) and French business leaders are also scheduled,” the French Foreign Ministry said. “As the transitional programme is taking place under conditions deemed satisfactory, we are examining the modalities for resuming cooperation with Niger,” it said.
