Zimbabwe has said that it is asking the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) for permission to sell an extra 10 tons of ivory.
National Parks and Wildlife Management director Willias Makombe said he hoped CITES, at its conference in Nairobi early next year, would approve Zimbabwe's application to sell more ivory.
According to media reports about 100 elephants have been killed in Zimbabwe's wildlife parks in the past few months. CITES deputy secretary general has warned that Zimbabwe's failure to contain poaching activities could result in the country being banned from trading in ivory.
