Diesel supplies run dry

Diesel supplies ran dry at the weekend in most parts of the country, bringing public transport to a standstill, news reports said on Monday. Sunday papers reported that hundreds of people were unable to travel to their rural homes to be with their families for the festive season. "People are stranded at Mbare (Harare's main bus terminus) and the roads are littered with buses that have run out of diesel," Ben Mucheche, leader of the Rural Bus Operators Association, told the 'Sunday Mail'. Meanwhile, 'The Sunday Standard' reported that riot police had to be called in on Saturday morning at one fuel station in the capital to control angry motorists, some of whom had queued for eight hours for diesel rations of 20 litres.
