Angolan minister on official visit

Angola’s foreign minister Joao Miranda on Wednesday visited Zambia where he held talks with his counterpart Keli Walubita and was later received by President Frederick Chiluba, official Angolan media reports said. After meeting with Walubita, Miranda was quoted as saying: “I have obtained assurances from the Zambian government that it is not going to provide shelter for Jonas Savimbi or his UNITA rebels.” Miranda added that the way had been cleared for a meeting between Chiluba and Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, although no date had been set. Miranda’s visit comes after tensions escalated between the two countries over Angola’s allegations that Zambia was helping supply UNITA.
