The secretary-general of the ruling MPLA party Joao Lourenco told
residents of the besieged government-held city of Malanje this week that the military situation would improve in the next few days. "What we are doing in Luanda, here in Malanje, and the rest of the country is to create conditions to put an end to (rebel leader) Jonas Savimbi's army in the near future," Lourenco was quoted by the state news agency as saying. He added that the government would never negotiate with Savimbi:
"The authorities will decide how best to end the suffering of the
Angolan people."
