US to support fight against AIDS

The United States plans to invest between US $500,000 and US $1.7 million a year in Namibia to help in the fight against AIDS, media reports said. According to the reports, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) has completed a draft HIV-AIDS programme strategy on Namibia which should pave the way for funds to be released. The report apparently attempts to identify gaps where the US can focus its efforts most effectively to make a measurable and relatively quick contribution, added the reports. Government figures estimate that 150,000 Namibians are infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, and that the number of AIDS orphans in the country will increase dramatically in the next 10 to 15 years.
