US accused of encouraging terrorists

    JOHANNESBURG

    A disagreement has broken out between Namibia and the United States (US) after the US expressed concern over the reports of human rights abuses in the northeast Caprivi Strip by the security forces, 'The Namibian' reported on Friday.

    According to the report, the embassy said that it "urges government forces to desist from these abuses and to respect the civil rights guaranteed to all citizens under the Namibian constitution." The Namibian government responded to this by saying that the US was interfering in the country's internal affairs.

    The authorities said the embassy should use "established" diplomatic channels to raise its concern with the government. The US was the first country to break the silence amongst the diplomatic community in Namibia over reports of abuse in the region.
