Zambian police arrest armed Angolans near border

The police in Zambia have announced the arrests of three Angolan nationals on firearms charges who were apprehended near Senango in the southwest of the country near the country's borders with Angola and Namibia's volatile Caprivi Strip, the 'Zambia Daily Mail' reported on Thursday. The report which gave few details, named two men who had been arrested in possession of arms and ammunition. The third was arrested following a robbery at a local secondary school. Britain provides refugee assistance The British government this week announced an aid package of over US $625,000 to help Zambia provide for thousands of refugees from the Democratic Republic Congo (DRC) and other neighbouring nations, media reports said on Thursday. British Deputy High Commissioner to Zambia, Paul Nessling, was quoted as saying the funds from the Department For International Development (DFID) will be administered by two international non governmental organisations, OXFAM and Care Zambia in collaboration with UNHCR and the Zambia Red Cross Society. "We applaud the Zambian tradition of offering safe haven to refugees even when your own resources are depleted," said Nessling.
