Government drops plan to ban strikes

The Zimbabwe government has dropped plans to ban strike action by workers, Reuters reported this week, quoting the Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister, Florence Chitauro. The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU), the main target of the proposed legislation, welcomed the announcement and said it would soon decide whether it should return to tripartite forums for negotiation which it had abandoned. "We realised it could not work in this country because employers were taking advantage and using summary dismissal, which is against what we had aimed to achieve," Chitauro was quoted as saying.
