Forty-six civilians reported shot

At least 46 civilians who had fled the besieged government-held city of Malanje to a nearby village were shot and killed at the weekend after they were reportedly rounded up by UNITA rebels, news reports said on Tuesday. The Portuguese news agency, Lusa, quoted a survivor of the attack on Saturday as saying they had been taken from the village of Quipacassa in the Cangandala area south of the central city of Malanje, marched to a nearby river, and shot. The reports, which were not independently confirmed, said the villagers had left Malanje because of famine in the city. Humanitarian officials told IRIN last week at least three or four people were dying daily of hunger in Malanje.
