The Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Agostinho Carlos do Rosario announced on Monday that Mozambique would lift the 1990 ban on elephant hunting next month and sell off 1.8 million tons of ivory seized from poachers.
Do Rosario said revenue generated from the sale of ivory would be spent on the conservation of the country's remaining elephant population of about 15,000. Do Rosario added, however, that "spot hunting" would only be allowed in areas where there was a proven "excess" of elephants.
