Motorists may have to pay ‘user fees’ on Botswana roads

The government of Botswana is considering proposals to introduce a road-user charge system to recover costs of developing and maintaining the country’s road network, the ‘Botswana Gazette’ reported on Thursday. Director of Roads, Mike Pinard told the newspaper that the annual costs of “provision, maintenance and operation of roads is estimated at P412,60 million but at present road users contribute less than 20 percent of the costs of maintaining the road system through the current mechanisms in place.” Botswana has an estimated 18,000 km of roads of which about 7,000 km are paved
