Intensified action needed

An estimated US $300 million annually would be needed to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa from the year 2000, double what was spent last year, according to a report on the crisis quoted by the news agency PANA. The report was presented at a three-day sub-regional technical meeting in Mozambique this week sponsored by UNAIDS. The meeting, attended by nine southern African countries, aimed at “intensifying the past approaches and rationalising regional support” of the various UN agencies and country actors, a WHO official told IRIN on Friday. “At the country level what has been done on HIV/AIDS is very little compared to what the epidemic is doing,” he added. “Intensified action means money, and it means other resources as well such as technical expertise.”
