Russian crew alive

Russia's Foreign Ministry said that it had received information that the crew of the plane which was downed by the UNITA rebel movement on 12 May, were alive and in a "satisfactory" condition, Itar-Tass the Russian news agency reported on Friday. The ministry added that together with other Russian departments and organisations it would continue to take all possible measures to secure the release of the airmen. Meanwhile, according to diplomatic sources in Angola, UNITA has floated the idea of a "loose federation" as an initiative which could form part of a future Angolan peace deal. An anonymous document on the Internet in April called for consideration of the idea. The diplomatic sources noted that UNITA has never before officially advocated a federal system for Angola.
