Court eases bail conditions for two journalists

A Zimbabwe court has eased the bail conditions on two journalists who returned from Britain this week where they were treated for post-torture trauma, news reports said. The journalists, Mark Chavunduka, editor of 'The Standard' and a senior reporter, Ray Choto, were remanded to appear for trial on 2 August on condition that they report to police once a week. The case arises out of a report by the newspaper last January which alleged a coup plot. Their arrest and medical reports at the time confirming they had been tortured raised an outcry by international rights groups. The magistrate ruled that a security bond equivalent to US $520 be refunded and ordered their passports returned.
