The main opposition party FRODEBU yesterday expelled former Hutu president Sylvestre Ntibantunganya, accusing him of trying to divide the party, news organisations reported. Three other members were also ousted. The dispute stems from their support for exiled FRODEBU leader Jean Minani, while the party’s executive board opposes Minani. Analysts note that the move will pose more problems for the envisaged signing of a peace agreement in June as part of the Arusha peace process. Ntibantunganya was ousted as president in a 1996 coup that returned Major Pierre Buyoya to power.
