US-Africa meeting adopts “blueprint” for 21st century

The US-Africa ministerial conference ended in Washington yesterday with the adoption of a “blueprint” for the next century, focusing on more development assistance, trade and investment. Tanzanian Foreign Minister Jaraya Kikwete summed up the meeting as the “beginning of a strong relationship”. The blueprint noted that US assistance was based on recipient countries carrying out economic reform and eliminating corruption, news reports said. According to the German DPA news agency, many African ministers expressed frustration over the “profound misperception of Africa among developed countries”. This had resulted in “very disappointing” investment levels in Africa, they said.
