Scores dying of cholera

Up to 20 people are dying daily from cholera in the remote Liberian county of Grand Kru, the BBC reported today, quoting the director of the region’s only hospital, Jackson Dueh. Dueh called the situation alarming, the radio station said. “A lack of drugs and the difficulty of transport in Grand Kru County meant the cholera was reaching epidemic proportions,” the BBC added. It said unsafe drinking water had been blamed for the spread of the waterborne disease. Residents of the county, it said, had been drinking from creeks used by herders to water their animals. The regional capital of Barclayville is also affected. Grand Kru is one of the least developed and most inaccessible parts of Liberia, lying some 300 km southeast of the capital, Monrovia.
