When the sea drains from your blood
Simon Talyor/IRIN South African fisherman Desmond Makka was born on the ocean. As a boy, his grandfather taught him the secrets of the sea. He learned about where to find different schools of fish, about the banks and headlands, and about the currents of the waters around Kleinmond, outside Cape Town. But today, Desmond struggles to make a living from fishing. The combined effect of off-shore commercial fishing that disrupts the marine ecosystem, illegal poaching caused by government regulations and the impact of climate change mean that there just aren't as many fish as there used to be.
