Faced with the low coltan prices in Kisengo, Congo, many miners and traders have taken the sandy road leading northward.
Gold has attracted miners to Kamoko Quarry since the 1990s. Like Kisengo, it used to be a tiny village, but today it’s a town, with bars, restaurants, a radio station, hotels, and tick-infested brothels. The military, the police, and a flood of government agencies have set up shop in Kamoko, each with their own rules and taxes.
