Where's the money for humanitarian aid?
There’s a familiar riddle across the cash-strapped humanitarian sector: Who has funding, who gets it, where does it go, and how does it get there?
Simply put: Humanitarian needs are soaring, and donor budgets aren’t keeping pace.
For example, the International Committee of the Red Cross is debating cuts that could amount to 15% of its budget in frontline emergencies this year, citing extensive funding shortages. The February earthquakes in Syria and Türkiye killed tens of thousands, but money has been slow to arrive. And while Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has dominated media and donor attention, a host of other emergencies across the globe have taken a backseat.
Join TNH Policy Editor Irwin Loy this Thursday at 2pm CET for an online conversation with Isabelle Roughol. They’ll discuss what’s driving these funding woes and what solutions are on the table.
