It is with deep regret and sadness that we received news that IRIN’s regular contributor in Yemen, Almigdad Mohammed Ali Mojalli, was killed on Sunday morning at Hammam Jaref, on the outskirts of the capital Sana’a.

Almigdad, who also contributed to The Daily Telegraph and Voice of America, had been reporting on the human impact of Yemen’s civil war for our humanitarian news service since February 2015, often at high personal risk.

Several times, he considered fleeing Yemen, but ultimately decided to stay and document the suffering of his people. In this diary entry, he detailed the death of a family member, the challenge of raising his son in this environment, and his attempts to protect his family from the fate that ultimately became him.

In a highly polarised conflict, he always remained neutral and objective, highlighting the war’s impact on civilians on all sides. He was a true journalist who maintained his professionalism even at the hardest of times. He always said that he wanted to tell the world what was happening to his country – and in this, he was determined.

Colleagues said Almigdad died of injuries sustained in an apparent airstrike. We do not yet know the full details, but his death is yet another example of the tragic cost of this war. We urge respect for the lives of journalists and all civilians in Yemen and elsewhere; and hope relevant authorities look into the circumstances surrounding his death.

We will miss Almigdad’s commitment, passion, and warmth. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.
