Some 40,000 civil servants in Niger stayed away from work on Wednesday and Thursday to press their demand for the payment of overdue salaries, a media source in the capital, Niamey, told IRIN.
The umbrella Union des syndicats des travailleurs du Niger (USTN) is demanding a timetable for the payment of between 11 and 12 months of salary arrears and overdue family allowances.
It also wants the reinstatement of the Syndicat nationale de agents de douane (SNAD), suspended by late president Ibrahim Bare Mainassara.
The source described the strike, which was due to end on Friday, as largely successful. Most government offices were empty except the state-owned media, which only provided minimum services.
On Monday and Tuesday, journalists, social assistants and nurses went on strike to obtain the payment of two months’ salary arrears for this year.
