Mozambican authorities have arrested 11 police officers for the deaths last month of 83 people who were jammed into a small prison cell in northern Mozambique, state radio reported at the weekend. ‘Radio Mozambique’ said three people, including the director of the Criminal Investigation Police, Juma Mussequesse, were arrested. Mozambican and South African doctors said the victims died of asphyxiation. Many of dead prisoners were RENAMO supporters who had been arrested following nationwide anti-government demonstrations. At least 41 people were killed in countrywide clashes between protesters and police.
