Malawi names eight legislators in US $13 million fraud

A parliamentary committee in Malawi has accused eight legislators of defrauding the government of US $13 million since 1996, news reports said on Wednesday. Quoting a parliamentary audit report released on Tuesday, reports said that the money was lost through fraud, petty theft, general financial mismanagement and abuse, poor procurement procedures and unwillingness to recover debts. According to the reports members of parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), which produced the report, have received deaths threats since they started working on the audit several months ago. Parliament is expected to make recommendation of how to deal with lawmakers involved in alleged fraud and corruption.
