The rebel Rassemblement congolais pour la democratie (RCD) has appointed a former general of late president Mobutu Sese Seko to take charge of its military operations, ‘The East African’ newspaper said today. It said the appointment of General Celestine Ilunga, a former head of Mobutu’s military intelligence, followed a visit to Goma by high-ranking Ugandan government officials a week ago. Ilunga’s appointment was part of efforts to unify the rebel factions, ‘The East African’ said. “The RCD is the only forum that can bring together all Congolese to face the challenges of building their country,” the newspaper quoted Ilunga as saying in the rebel headquarters of Goma. Meanwhile, MLC leader Jean-Pierre Bemba told Reuters today that he would keep up his fight to oust Kabila despite his fathers’s cabinet appointment.
