UN Security Council extends UNOMSIL’s mandate

The UN Security Council yesterday (Thursday) approved the extension of the mandate of the UN Observer Mission in Sierra Leone (UNOMSIL). According to a news release received today (Friday) by IRIN, the mission will now remain in Sierra Leone until 13 June in keeping with a recommendation by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

UNOMSIL will be re-established in Freetown as soon as possible and the number of military observers will be increased from eight to 14. However, this will be subject to strict observance of the security situation, the statement said. The Council also commended the efforts of the West African intervention force, ECOMOG. It urged member states to support ECOMOG financially and logistically, and provide bilateral assistance to the Sierra Leone government.
