Inter-Religious Council meets Sankoh again

The secretary-general of the influential Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone (IRCSL) told IRIN today (Tuesday) he held a second meeting with jailed Revolutionary United Front (RUF) leader Foday Sankoh yesterday (Monday). Reverend Alimamy Koroma said the IRCSL was facilitating the peace process between the government and rebels and this meeting was a follow-up to the one held last week. He described the meetings as a “breakthrough” and said he was “very optimistic” regarding the prospects for peace. “There is full cooperation from both sides,” he added. Koroma said he was unaware of any split within the RUF, and believed this was unlikely. RUF spokesman Omrie Golley told AFP recently he did not recognise a group of rebels that had been negotiating with the IRCSL.
