Corruption in public bodies

The anti-corruption commission in Mali has published its fourth report which
reveals embezzlement and mismanagement within several state-owned companies
and other public bodies, the BBC reported on Sunday.

One such company, the state property agency, allegedly has billions of CFA
francs unaccounted for. Others mentioned in the report include the National Tobacco and Match Company, the state pension funds, the Interior Ministry and public hospitals in the capital, Bamako. The commission also said that it has alerted the judicial authorities to the alleged
disappearance of large amounts of stocks donated by the UN World Food
Programme.

President Alpha Konare launched the anti-corruption drive last year and
since then some 15 senior officials have been arrested, the BBC reported.
