Kabila appoints top musicians as parliamentarians

DRC President Laurent-Desire Kabila has appointed two leading musicians, Tshala Muana and Tabu Ley, to the country’s new parliament, according to the independent Ugandan ‘Monitor’ daily. The two musicians are popular in east and central Africa. The appointments are part of the formation of the 300-member assembly, announced recently by the president. The deputies are said to come from all the 11 Congolese provinces including those under rebel control. Rebel groups and opposition politicians have criticised the formation of the new assembly and called the move a direct violation of the Lusaka peace agreement.
