Police heads to explain rising crime to cabinet

Nigeria’s government has summoned Police Minister David Jemibewon and Inspector General of Police Musiliu Smith to answer questions on rising crime, AFP reported on Wednesday. Information Minister Jerry Gana told reporters in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, that the two officials would appear before the cabinet on 19 July, the agency said. Jemibewon announced last week that armed robbery was increasing, despite police efforts to combat crime. When Nigeria’s civilian government came to power in May 1999, police officials blamed preceding military regimes for a shortage of staff and resources in the force.
