UN envoy concerned over “vulnerable” peace process

The UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for DRC, Kamel Morjane, has noted that peace and security are still seriously under threat in the country. In a statement, issued this week to coincide with the first anniversary of the signing of the Lusaka peace accord on 10 July 1999, he said the agreement was still the most viable instrument for bringing about peace in the DRC. However, the stalemate surrounding the inter-Congolese dialogue, ceasefire violations and threats to the fragile ceasefire still holding in parts of the country were of extreme concern and showed the vulnerability of the peace process, Morjane said. He urged all signatories to respect the peace accord they signed a year ago.
