EU proposes ban on rough diamonds

    ABIDJAN
    The European Commission proposed new regulations on Wednesday that would ban Europe’s importation of rough diamonds from Sierra Leone in line with the UN Security Council resolution adopted earlier in July, the EU said on Wednesday. Violators of the proposal, which has to be approved by the EU Council of Ministers, would be punished, it said. The Security Council has imposed an 18-month ban on the trade in uncertified rough diamonds from Sierra Leone in a bid to stop their sale from funding the Revolutionary United Front rebellion.
