Amnesty calls for end to impunity

Amnesty International is recommending the establishment of a judicial mechanism under the auspices of the UN to put on trial those accused of human rights abuses and war crimes, it said in a report published on Wednesday. “Without considerable international assistance it will not be possible at this stage to conduct trials which meet international standards,” Amnesty said. The tribunal, it added, should include Sierra Leonean and international judicial officials. Amnesty also recommended that the legal mechanism help strengthen the capacity of Sierra Leone’s courts to try human rights violators.
