Fridays off for workers in Sharia state

Zamfara, the first state to impose the Sharia in Nigeria, has declared Friday a work-free day, AFP reported. Governor Sani Ahmed made the announcement at a reception on 26 July for members of the ruling People’s Democratic Party who have joined his All People’s Party. The measure is aimed at enabling civil servants to attend special two-hour sermons each Friday at a public square in Gusau, the state capital, “to broaden their knowledge of Islam,” Ahmed was quoted as saying.
