Concern over possible link with RoC rebels

Diplomatic sources have expressed concern over reports of a possible link between DRC troops and rebels loyal to ousted Republic of Congo prime minister Bernard Kolelas. The latter is said to have visited Kinshasa to discuss an alleged deal to attack the two main RoC cities - Brazzaville and Pointe Noire - from bases in DRC. Noting the DRC government’s growing detachment from the Lusaka peace process, the sources said the possible involvement of RoC rebels was a worrying development in the region, possibly aimed at putting pressure on RoC President Denis Sassou Nguesso to cooperate with the DRC against the rebel Mouvement de liberation du Congo (MLC) in Equateur province. The DRC government has denied reports of collaboration with Kolelas’ rebels.
