Army claims full control

The Angolan army chief of staff, General Joao de Matos, said on Wednesday that the town of Catate on the southeastern outskirts of the capital Luanda was firmly under army control following a dawn raid on Monday by UNITA rebels. The state news agency Angop quoted him as saying: “The situation in the region is under total control of government authorities.” In the attack, some 60 km from Luanda, UNITA rebels killed four civilians and looted a Catholic mission. In a counter-attack, the army said its troops killed ten of the rebels.
