Senate president sworn in

Nigeria’s Senate endorsed Pius Anyim, 39, on Thursday as its president and Ibrahim Mantu as his deputy, according news reports. Both men were supported for the positions by their ruling Peoples’ Democratic party (PDP) that holds 67 seats in the Senate. The 109-member body on Tuesday impeached Chuba Okadigbo, one of a number of senators under investigation for corruption by a Senate panel. Anyim is the third president of the Senate since the country’s return to civilian rule in May 1999. The first speaker, Evan Enwerem, was also impeached.
