Ruling party sets conditions for elections

Secretary General Joao Lourenco of the ruling People’s Movement for Liberation of Angola (MPLA) has said that the second general elections in his country would “only take place when security and peace conditions are in place”, the official news agency ‘Angop’ reported on Monday. “At the moment no one is in a position to tell whether those conditions are in place for the holding of elections in the year 2001”, Lourenco said. He explained that under the current electoral law in Angola, the calling of the elections needed prior consultations between the head of state and the political parties to fix the exact dates.
