President tells judges to remain straight

Rwandan President Paul Kagame appealed to the country's judges on Monday to remain disciplined and honest in their work and to cooperate closely with other law enforcement bodies, presidential spokesman Nicholas Shalita said on Monday. "The people look to the courts as a last resort in search for justice. It is, therefore, very important that you do not allow the judiciary to be compromised by corruption," Kagame told the judges. He also urged the judiciary to work harmoniously with the executive and legislative arms of the state to strengthen the country's overburdened justice system, despite the limited available resources. He made the appeals at the start of a two-week retreat for judges during which they will review the judiciary and ways to improve the institution. Government leaders, the police, local and central government officials as well as civil society personalities are also attending.
