Chissano admits possibility of third term

Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano has admitted the possibility of seeking a further term in office “if that is the will of the people”, despite reiterating his resolve not to stand in the 2004 election, Lusa said on Tuesday. Chissano made his comments during a Sunday press conference at the close of a national conference of cadres of the ruling FRELIMO party, held in the central coast city of Beira. “I have challenged the party members to show that (the decision not to run) is effectively the will of the Mozambican people”, Chissano said, adding that it was “not the first time” he had made such a decision.
