Repatriation of refugees set to resume

    NAIROBI

    The voluntary repatriation of Eritrean refugees from Sudan is set to resume on 22 September. In a meeting of the Tripartite Repatriation Commission held in Nairobi last week, it was agreed to resume the repatriation effort, which was brought to a standstill in mid-July by heavy rains, a spokesman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) told IRIN on Tuesday. The Tripartite Commission - made up of representatives of the Eritrean and Sudanese governments and the UNHCR, also agreed that the repatriation operation would target both those refugees who fled fighting between Eritrea and Ethiopia last year and those who fled the Eritrean war of independence. The commission aims to reach the goal of 160,000 returnees - the entire caseload - by the end of next year.
