Rebels kill farmers, civilians

Suspected UNITA rebels at the weekend killed 12 farmers and wounded 14 others during an attack on Dombe settlement, 14 km from Chinguar in Bie province, central Angola, the official news agency reported on Monday. Quoting an administrative source in Chinguar, Angop said in addition to killing civilians, the rebels had also burned down 73 houses and looted all the residents’ possessions. The attacks, added the reports, led to the displacement of more than 2,000 civilians who arrived in Cuito from the Gamba settlement, in Nharea on Monday. At the same time, the Catholic radio ‘Ecclesia’ reported that two people were killed in a separate weekend attack on a camp for displaced people in Chinhana, about 1,000 km south of the capital, Luanda. The report said Chinhana houses about 7,000 displaced people who have fled their villages because of the renewed fighting between UNITA and government forces.
