The UN World Food Programme (WFP) in collaboration with CARE, assisted 84,770 people affected by insecurity in Gitega and Rutana provinces with 800 tons of food. In its weekly emergency update, WFP said that in addition, 3,476 malnourished persons, admitted at the Caritas and Groupe Volunariat Civil (GVC) feeding centres, received 15 tons of WFP food in Bujumbura Mairie and Bujumbura Rural province. WFP delivered 140 tons of food to 34 social centres benefiting 9,813 most vulnerable persons. Some 2,331 refugees from the DRC received 40 tons of WFP food in Bujumbura Mairie province through the German NGO, GTZ.
Some 600 repatriates from Tanzania were assisted by WFP in Ngozi. WFP resumed food distributions for the Congolese refugees currently in Ngarara camp and suburbs of the town to address their immediate food needs. WFP and UNHCR intend to carry out a joint census. According to the results of the survey undertaken by the International Medical Corps (IMC), in early June indicated a decrease of the global malnutrition rate in Muyinga province and an increase in Kirundo province. The decrease in Muyinga was the result of the intensive WFP food distribution and the good treatment of epidemics, WFP noted.
The increase reported in Kirundo resulted from malaria epidemics, reduced access to medical care and the drought.
