Agreement on Beira corridor upgrade

President Joaquim Chissano and President Robert Mugabe signed a note of understanding on Monday on the development of the Beira corridor. Lusa reported that the heads of state signed the agreement during bilateral talks in Mozambique’s port city of Beira, a key outlet for landlocked Zimbabwe. According to the report, use of the corridor - which links Zimbabwe with the Indian ocean - recently dropped by about 50 percent because of the ongoing political and economic crisis in Zimbabwe. The talks were preceded by a meeting between Mugabe, Chissano and Malawi President Bakili Muluzi over Zimbabwe’s crippling land crisis.
