Defence Ministry reports attacks near Guinean border

Liberia’s Defence Ministry on Tuesday reported heavy fighting in and around the northern town of Kpatazu, “where dissident forces burnt down the entire town.” The ministry said in a statement that an Armed Force of Liberia commander, identified as Colonel Ellis, was wounded in the fighting. It added that fighting had intensified around Kolahun, another town in the northern county of Lofa, and that government forces were trying to block further rebel advances in the county. “Our overall objective has been to contain dissident activity and eventually drive them out of Liberia and back into Guinea,” the ministry said. Liberia has maintained that armed men who have periodically been attacking Lofa since 1999 are based in and supported by Guinea.
