Government troops on alert

The Liberian government has tightened security in Gbarpolu County following reports of rebel troop movements there, news organizations reported Defence Minister Daniel Chea as saying at the weekend. Chea, who said that government troops have been put on alert in Gbarpolu, refuted a claim by rebel group ‘Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy’ (LURD) that fighting had spread from northern Lofa County to Bomi. Information on the fighting between government forces and dissidents has been sketchy but humanitarian agencies estimate that some 40,000 people have fled northern Lofa County since April.
