US agency donates 500 hybrid cows to farmers

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in conjunction with the Heifer Project International (HPI) have disbursed US $2 million which is equivalent to 500 hybrid cows to the Rwandan farmers, Rwanda News Agency (RNA) quoted USAID officials as saying on Wednesday. Eighty-five hybrid cows arrived in Kigali from South Africa on Wednesday and eight others will be brought in from Uganda, RNA said. It quoted agriculture minister, Ephraim Kabaija, as saying that the cows would be given out to the poor people through the community development committees “which is in line with the government’s commitment to eradicate poverty in Rwanda”. He said that women would benefit much more than men in this project because it is the “marginalised group”. He said that the first beneficiaries would give out the off springs to the people who never got.
