Thousands of jobs lost in textile industry, newspaper says

More than 65,000 jobs were lost in the textile industry in Nigeria in a three-year period up to August 1999, ‘The News’ daily reported. It said more than 32 textile firms had closed and over 12 were in distress. The main reason, according to the daily, is the lifting in 1997 of a textile imports ban which manufacturers want reimposed for five to six years so that the industry can rebuild its strength and face international competition.
